Window wells make living in the basement thousand times more pleasant. You get to have enough ventilation, natural light and sometimes even a unique view. With accessibility to sunlight and fresh air, an environment free from mold, and mildew as well.

However, these wonderful perks come with a price. To get the most out of such a structure, you must show it proper care. Window wells are in direct contact with the ground and leaves or other debris can easily get stuck and create a ton of problems.

How do you Maintain Window Wells?

To ensure a healthy window well and basement waterproofing system, here is how to maintain them:

Remove Debris

Whether in the sump pump, gutters or window well, debris must be removed. This also applies if you have a lid on top. When it accumulates, debris clogs the openings. It can also clog the entire drainage mechanism inside. So the smartest thing to do is to cleanse the whole area after storms and to inspect it at least 3 times a month.

If a drainage problem occurs in the window well, the entire foundation is at risk. From a tiny basement leak, the situation can culminate into frequent floods and nasty mold problems. Removing debris means getting inside and picking it up slowly bit by bit.

Caulk It Up

With time, the liner that connects the window well and foundation structure can contract. When this happens, the whole thing will start to pull away from the foundation. This makes an ideal atmosphere for debris build up, leaks and drain clogs. If this has happened to you, here are the steps you should take:

  • Wash away the area between the well and the foundation.
  • Put the liner in place, adjusting it exactly like before.
  • Apply enough concrete or caulk on the edges.

Purchase a Cover

Besides being a safety measure, window well covers significantly reduce the amount of debris that enters on the inside. They can be made from various materials, but remember to purchase ones which led enough amount of natural light to pass through. Also, you should make sure that the cover can be opened from the inside. This created an additional emergency exit which can be very useful in difficult situations like fires and burglaries.

Gutters and Roofs

Regular gutter cleaning and roof maintenance are important for keeping your home and backyard nice and dry. If your gutters are clogged or you have a leaky roof, the consequences will be seen throughout the entire house, including the window well.

The condition of the backyard is key for having a functional basement waterproofing or window well system. If the roof or gutters have issues, the soil in the yard will become filled with water, resulting in immense pressure on the foundation and well structures.
