The roles of basement waterproofing cannot be overemphasized in any building. And as a part of basement waterproofing, a French drain can be constructed.

What Is a French Drain?
A French drain is a drainage system that is constructed to drain water from the land. It is designed to prevent the ground from becoming water-logged around a structure like a building or a wall. If you have a wet basement, the French Drain is one of the perfect solutions you need to fix the problem.
By principle, water flows downhill through the most accessible route available. That is the idea behind the French Drain. It is a slightly sloped trench that is filled with gravel with a perforated pipe inserted to divert water away from the house. A French drain is also referred to as a weeping drain, trench drain, filter drain, land drain, or curtain drain.
How Does a French Drain work?
A French drain allows water to filter into a perforated pipe that is laid in the middle of the graded stone in the center of the trench. The drained water is carried away to the surface water drainage system outside the home or to a soakaway.
The volume of water that can be collected and drained will be determined by the size, position, and the design of a French drain constructed. For water to flow freely, the trench bottom should be made to slope about an inch for over 8 feet in the direction designed for the water to flow. Based on the situation of the home, the water from the French Drain can be diverted to a drainage ditch, a soakaway, or the street.
When Do You Need a French Drain?
A French Drain is highly useful depending on the location of your building and the water issues there. Apart from basement waterproofing, you may need a French Drain when the following situations occur:
- If water gets or leaks into your basement.
- When you have surface water issues such as a driveway rusty washes out or a soggy lawn.
- When you are building a retaining wall on a hillside.
When you have a serious problem with surface water, constructing a French Drain is the perfect solution you should consider. To construct a French Drain perfectly, hire professionals for best results.
